IBKR's October DARTs Rebound: Can Client Growth Sustain Momentum?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • IBKR's October DARTs rose 5% sequentially to 4.306 million but declined 4% year over year.
  • Client accounts surged 34% to 5.678 million, while margin loan balances jumped 31% to $106.8 billion.
  • IBKR shares fell 16.5% in six months, while earnings are projected to grow 22.8% in 2026 and 26.1% in 2027.

Interactive Brokers (IBKR - Free Report) witnessed a recovery in trading activity in October 2026, with total client Daily Average Revenue Trades (DARTs) increasing 5% sequentially to 4.306 million. However, the metric declined 4% year over year, indicating that trading activity has yet to regain its prior-year momentum. The sequential improvement is encouraging, but sustaining this recovery will depend on market conditions and investor participation.

A key positive for IBKR is its ability to consistently expand its customer base despite fluctuations in trading volumes. Total client accounts reached 5.678 million at October-end, increasing 34% year over year. The company’s competitive pricing, efficient trading infrastructure and access to more than 175 global markets continue to support customer acquisition. A larger client base should provide opportunities for higher transaction volumes as trading activity strengthens.

Apart from commission-generating activity, Interactive Brokers’ expanding interest-earning assets remain an important growth driver. Client margin loan balances grew 31% year over year to $106.8 billion, while client credit balances increased 15% to $180.5 billion. These trends should support interest income generation and reduce the company’s dependence on trading-related revenues. Meanwhile, client equity increased 19% to $928.6 billion, reflecting a substantially larger customer asset base.

IBKR’s technology-driven operating model further strengthens its growth prospects. Continued investments in automation, product innovation and global market accessibility should enhance customer engagement and support operating efficiency. Its competitive execution costs also remain an advantage in attracting active traders and institutional clients, potentially translating into greater wallet share over time.

Looking ahead, the sustainability of October’s DART recovery remains a key factor to watch. Although subdued year-over-year trading volumes and interest rate fluctuations pose risks, strong account additions, growing margin lending balances and a scalable brokerage platform should support IBKR’s long-term revenue growth. Over 2020-2025, Interactive Brokers’ total net revenues saw a compound annual growth rate of 22.8%, aided by higher interest income, commission revenues and business expansion.

Business Diversification Efforts of IBKR’s Peers

IBKR’s key competitors, Charles Schwab (SCHW - Free Report) and Robinhood Markets, Inc. (HOOD - Free Report) , continue to expand their product offerings and strengthen their financial services ecosystems to attract customers, deepen engagement and diversify revenues.

Schwab continues to diversify its business through wealth management, banking, lending and advanced trading solutions. In the third quarter of 2026, net flows into Schwab Wealth Advisory increased 55% year over year, while Pledged Asset Line balances surged 59% to $37.3 billion.

The company also announced single-stock futures on its thinkorswim platform, plans to expand its cryptocurrency offerings and introduced an AI-powered assistant, Charley. These initiatives should deepen client relationships, attract additional assets and support revenue diversification.

Robinhood is expanding its financial ecosystem through banking, advisory services, prediction markets, digital assets and international operations. In the third quarter, Robinhood Banking attracted nearly $5 billion in deposits, while Gold subscribers reached 5.2 million.

The company also unveiled trading capabilities, including AI-powered trading tools and plans for expanded trading hours and perpetual futures. Its growing prediction markets business and expansion into the U.K. cryptocurrency market should further strengthen customer engagement, diversify revenues and create trading opportunities.
